Jess Lair, a former Montana State University professor who wrote a bestselling book considered the forerunner of the self-help movement, died of heart failure Thursday at his home in Bozeman. He was 73.
Lair’s first book published in 1973, “I Ain’t Much, Baby - But I’m All I’ve Got,” became a hit for its simple, nonacademic discussion of self-esteem and life choices. Tidbits like “Joy is not in things - it is in us,” were sprinkled throughout his writing.
“I Ain’t Much …” soon made The New York Times bestseller list, selling 3 million copies. It’s still in print today and is in Amazon.com’s top 50 bestsellers for self-help books.
